The areas of communication and media remain largely neglected in Africa’s development processes and yet they have immense potential to foster sustainable development. The Africa Commission of 2005 came up with a set of recommendations that were hailed as the most progressive development blueprint for Africa. One of the Commission’s strongest recommendations was the need for strengthened information, communication and knowledge networks that enable ordinary people to participate and own of their own development. This recommendation reaffirmed assertions of many development communicators globally and especially in Africa – that communication needs to be at the heart of development processes.
