Background

James came to CommsConsult in September 2011 from a background in Area Studies research. He graduated in 2007 with a BA (Hons) in Middle East Studies and in 2010 received a PhD in Ethno-Political Studies from the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter.

Through his research on post-conflict rebuilding in Kurdistan, James developed a keen awareness of obstacles to international development and the important role of civil society in processes of nurturing development and forming suitable, sustainable policy responses. James also has a long-standing interest in strategic communications having researched the effectiveness of historic public diplomacy programmes across the Middle East.

As an analyst and project manager for CommsConsult, James believes passionately in research as both an art and a tool for creating the building blocks of knowledge on which we base our understanding of the world. He sees effective communication as an essential bridge to achieving impact and excellence. His understanding of the impact agenda in the UK higher education marketplace is an important addition to CommsConsult’s portfolio of expertise.

James is particularly interested in research impact planning, influence analysis and developing tools and resources to help researchers create dynamic and fruitful impact and engagement strategies.
